What causes a stroke?

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. This interruption can be caused by a rupture or blockage of a blood vessel in the brain.

When a blood vessel ruptures, it leads to a hemorrhagic stroke, which can cause bleeding in or around the brain. On the other hand, if a blood vessel is blocked, typically by a blood clot, it results in an ischemic stroke. Both types of strokes severely affect brain function and can lead to significant neurological impairment or even death if not treated promptly.
